COURSE DETAILS
NSS Student Volunteer: Any student enrolled as a NSS volunteer, as per NSS
Manual should put in at least 240 hours of useful social work in a continuous
period of two years (i.e. 120 hours per year). The NSS volunteers wear a NSS
badge while undertaking any programme of community service. A work diary, known
as Volunteer’s diary, is to be maintained by each NSS volunteer, which will
help him/her in the assessment in his/her performance. Such volunteer is
eligible to get NSS Service Certificate from the colleges.
Composition of NSS Unit
One NSS unit consists of 100 student
volunteers led by a Programme Officer.

Duration
The students who are volunteering to
take part in NSS programme as their Part- IV requirements of the
under-graduation courses have to continue for two years and they have to pass
the courses NSS 1202 and NSS 2204.
Course No. NSS 1202 : 2 credits
The course NSS1202 is the first year
course that aims at the development of personality through community service,
caters to meaningful understanding of the interaction of society, and enables
the student to know and appreciate the dignity of labour. Students are expected
to fulfill the work requirement of 120 hours in the given year by participating
in activities such as physical work projects, campus maintenance works,
seminars, workshops, scribe and reading services, blood donation, tutorial
services and special assignments meeting the social demands. The theory
component of the course focuses on aims, objectives, history and scope of NSS
and discussion on issues pertaining to health, water harvest, waste land
development, safety management, first aid, AIDS awareness, sex education and
selected topics of contemporary interest. The course is evaluated by continuous
and final assessment at 70:30 ratio basis.
Course No. NSS 2204 : 2 credits
The course NSS 2204 is the second year
course that aims at developing the abilities of the volunteers to do a project
of social relevance by which the student interacts with the society. It
facilitates the students to identify problems and contemporary issues and work
to alleviate the same through research skills. This course focuses on
activities that will synchronise education with community service, in such a
way that it could sharpen the students’ skills of expression. Each student has
to obtain 120 hours by participating in out reach projects, conducting and
taking part in seminars and workshops, arranging and participating in group
discussions, and other service programmes.
