Jivana Jyoti Light of life, is a
programme to bring light into the lives of the Physically challenged, and arose
out of the American College's concern for this section of society. It trains
the physically disabled in various computer skills and functional English for a
year so as to make them employable, self reliant and socially productive.
Project aid from the Educational and Development services, India to the
American College, in 1990, initiated the beginning of the one year training
programme under the name JIVANA JYOTI. Sixteen years have passed since
then and in these years a total of 331 person (198 boys and 133 girls) drawn
from urban and rural Tamilnadu., have received training. The minimum
qualification for entry into the course is a pass in higher secondary.
In 1992 a specially designed hostel for
physically disabled was built. In can host 12 girls and 12 boys. An endowment
fund has been established with contributions from individuals and organization
in the USA, which enabled grant of financial assistance to the needy students
of JIVANA JYOTI.
Placement after training has been good
and is improving. The private sector and the Government are the main employers.
Public recognition of the college
efforts for the physically challenged has been encouraging. In 1995 Lions Club,
aura and the society for the physically handicapped honored Jivana Jyoti.
In 1996-97 the city cultural association adjudged the training centre and the
computer facilities as the best and gave an award of merit.
Each individual handicapped or otherwise
has a unique value and the same right to life, education and employment. The
college throughJivana Jyoti has blazoned this message and given in the
process hope and employment. The task now is to enlarge the programme to
benefit more such persons.
With faith in God and commitment, it may
not be long for that mission to succeed.
